MOTHER’S DAY: THINGS TO DO, PLACES TO GO

No one works harder than Mum. So why not treat her to the Mother’s Day she deserves: one built around her? Here are our top tips to help you plan the perfect day…

Most mums need a break. Every week is guaranteed to be busy, whether it’s juggling work and packing lunchboxes, stuffing the car with duvets destined for university towns or even stepping-in to pick up your kids.
So take a moment to pause for thought and plan a Mother’s Day that will surprise her for all the right reasons. You can’t fail if it’s based around what she likes most – whether that’s putting her feet up or trying something new…

An album in a day

Here’s a thought: every mum has ‘a hidden album’ with reams of pictures stacked up on the hard drive that are never printed out. So why not create a personal printed album for Mother’s Day 2017 – and more than that, make a day of it? Give her an empty photo album in the morning and tell her it will be filled by the evening. You’ll need to plan ahead to make sure whatever you do is photo-friendly, whether that’s breathtaking views, historic cobbled streets or hair-raising theme parks.

Treat her to the day out she’d like most – if she likes gardening, pack it with herbaceous borders! If you make it personal, it will create an album she’ll love to look back on. Best of all, it will be filled with both of your smiling faces in print – forever.

You could even start a new tradition of an album every year, so it’s happy Mother’s Day 2017, 2018, 2019…

Movie night

Of course what she might want most of all is a night on the sofa with you. Every mum is rushed off her feet sometimes, so how about flat-out relaxing? Make Mother’s Day a movie night and invite her to a ‘not-quite-premiere-night’ screening on your TV. If you don’t already know, find out what her all-time favourite film is. From Dirty Dancing to Thelma and Louise, get it lined up and ready to go. Rustle up some kernels in a pan and pop up some homemade popcorn with favourite toppings of her choice, from chilli and salt to maple syrup. How about a little something to nibble on the side? Our Pretzels Nibbly Pots are really moreish or lift the lid on our Mother’s Day Sleekster and share 27 of our best-loved chocolates – though no fighting over the last, it’s her day!

Cook her favourite

Dig out those old recipes that are dog-eared and turning a bit yellow, the ones in a folder somewhere that haven’t seen the light of day in years. It will make her Mother’s Day if you make them, especially if it’s the sort of thing she’ll never have time for herself. Old, familiar smells coming from the oven will bring back memories, which you can share over lunch, or dinner. If she’d like something new and surprising, have a flick through our cookbook, A New Way of Cooking with Chocolate, for over 100 recipes enhanced with cocoa, from citrus salad with white chocolate dressing to slow roast shoulder of lamb and to-die-for desserts. Whether it’s traditional or adventurous, you know her best.

Time for afternoon tea

Get ready to start cutting the edges off those cucumber sandwiches. Why not dress the table and invite her to afternoon tea? It might not be a three-tiered cake affair, but the fact you’ve bothered to make it yourself will earn serious brownie points, with extra points for home-baked scones (see, Plantation Scones, page 194 of our cocoa cookbook). Alternatively, for a bit of Mother’s Day escapism, why not be waited on? Beyond traditional stacked sandwiches, enjoy afternoon tea with a unique savoury cocoa twist at our London restaurant Rabot 1745 or Roast+Conch in Leeds. There’s always time for afternoon tea!

Silly question, but does she like chocolate?

When you’re giving her chocolates, how about mentioning casually that you’re going to be making your own? Get ready to roll up your sleeves and invite Mum to a Bean-to-Bar Experience. Discover the art of chocolate-making and take home a masterpiece. Simply find a Bean-to-Bar Experience near you, and mum’s the word!

Now you know what you’re doing for the day, but you’ll still need a present. Well don’t panic, there’s still time. Take a look at our Mother’s Day gifts, from handy Pocket Selections to The Chocolate and Prosecco Collection (glasses at the ready!) these are treats you’ll want to share…
