We love this cocoa-themed twist on afternoon tea, which includes cacao-infused drinks (including the best hot chocolate you’ll ever taste) and treats in the chic surroundings of this popular Borough Market restaurant, owned by the people behind Hotel Chocolat. Think rare beef and white chocolate horseradish sandwiches, scones with cocoa nib butter, brownie banana bread and much, much more. Love the ritual of afternoon tea but after something with a bit more bite? At Rabot 1745, London we’ve remixed the traditional British pastime to create an Anglo-West Indian experience with edge.
Our take on the traditional meal has all the hallmarks of the quintessential British repast – elegant sandwiches, baked delicacies, cake and, of course, tea – with an exuberant dash of our Caribbean cocoa estate heritage.
Salmon sandwiches? Naturally, but cured in cocoa gin and served with avocado. The traditional cucumber filling? Updated with dill and cocoa-nib cream cheese. The classic chicken club is a little less so after it’s laced with chocolate aioli, and our rare beef sandwich is lifted by a twist of white chocolate horseradish.
There are scones, of course, but our way: the chocolate and orange kind with a swirl of cocoa whip, and accompanied by our legendary banana bread. Our cake is a high-cocoa white chocolate cheesecake with mulled wine jelly, and to finish, what we do best: tasting chocolates created on site by our in-house chocolatier, directly from the bean.
And then there’s the tea. All the classics are here – English Breakfast, Earl Grey, green – but there’s so much more if all that cocoa has given you an appetite for adventure. Choose from coffees, cocoa shell infusions, iced chocolate with cocoa whip and lavish hot chocolate with salted caramel, hazelnut, or even – if you really want to seize the moment – an audacious hit of chilli, the way the Mayans used to drink it.
Afternoon tea is priced at £25pp based on two people sharing. Add a glass of Prosecco for an additional £5 each.
